The Racing Bulls driver was close to starring in an embarrassing moment for the event organizers and the FIA, due to the lack of compliance with safety regulations and racing conditions under the green flag.

Liam Lawson starred in one of the most curious, and dangerous, moments of the Mexican Grand Prixwhen on lap 3 he was about to overtake two track marshals who were collecting debris in turn 1. An incident that could have ended in tragedy and leaves many questions about how, even in the most organized events, situations can arise that get out of control.

The New Zealander Racing Bulls He had entered the pits on lap 2 to change the nose of his car after colliding with a Williams in the first round. But upon rejoining the track on lap 3, the marshals were still in turn 1 cleaning up the remains of the accident, as if nothing had happened, while the cars continued rolling under the green flag.

Lawson He passed literally centimeters from the marshals, who had to accelerate their pace to avoid an impact. The images are chilling, and the worst thing is that this should never happen. That’s why there are yellow flags, safety cars and a whole safety protocol that, in theory, FIA has under control.

After the race, the driver Racing Bulls spoke about what happened. “Honestly, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I came out of the pits with a new set of hard tires and as I came into the first corner there were two people crossing the track. I almost hit one of them. Honestly, it was very dangerous.“, he began by pointing out Lawson.

Obviously there was some miscommunication somewhere, but I had never experienced anything like this before. It’s quite unacceptable. I can’t understand how, on an active track, marshals are allowed to cross like that. I have no idea why, but I’m sure we’ll get some kind of explanation. It really can’t happen again.“added the pilot.

The FIA He issued a statement after the race, sent to the press, echoing the incident. “Following an incident in Turn 1, race control was informed that there was debris on the track at the apex of that corner. On Lap 3, marshals were alerted and told to remain on standby to enter the track and remove debris once all cars had passed Turn 1.”explains the official statement.

As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, instructions to send stewards were rescinded and a double yellow flag was displayed in that area. We are still investigating what happened after that point“added the FIA.
