Kuminga suffers a sprain and will be out for at least 3 weeks
Warriors power forward Jonathan Kuminga suffered a sprained right ankle and will be out for at least three weeks.
SAN FRANCISCO — The power forward of the Golden State Warriors, Jonathan Kumingawill be reevaluated in three weeks after an MRI confirmed he suffered a significant lateral sprain to his right ankle, the team said Sunday.
Kuminga suffered the injury late in the second quarter of Saturday’s 121-113 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, when he landed awkwardly in the paint and sprained his right ankle. He left the game immediately afterward and left the Chase Center on crutches after the victory. He underwent an MRI on Sunday.
Kuminga had been in the midst of the best stretch of his career, receiving more opportunities and being used as a primary scorer at times. He averaged 20.5 points in the last 14 games. But now the Warriors will be without their most explosive athlete for at least three weeks. He will miss at least 11 games.
The Warriors coach, Steve Kerrcalled the loss of Kuminga “brutal.”
The 22-year-old is averaging a career-high 16.8 points and 5 rebounds per game this season. Last month he became the first Warriors player with 30 or more points in consecutive games off the bench since Cazzie Russell in 1974.
The Warriors are already without Brandin Podziemski (abdominal pain) and Gary Payton II (calf).
“I’m glad we have the depth we have,” Kerr said Saturday. “I’m glad we got Kyle (Anderson). There was a reason we signed him and Buddy (Hield). We added a lot of depth for this reason to be able to withstand some injuries.
“It’s going to be tough. JK has been playing the best basketball of his career these last few weeks, so we’re going to miss him. But Kyle will be fine.”
