John McEnroe, world tennis legend, on Alcaraz: “He is the best, he is my favorite tennis player. He is the best thing that has happened to tennis in the last 10 years. I am happy that he is back, because when he was away tennis was more boring”
Despite currently occupying number 3 in the world ranking, Carlos Alcaraz is probably the most followed player on the circuit. His spectacular and colorful tennis arouses the admiration of practically all tennis fans, including legends of the racquet sport.
It is the case of John McEnroewho this Monday was full of praise for the Murcian tennis player during his visit to the program ‘The Revolt‘.
“Alcaraz is the best, he is my favorite tennis player. It is the best thing that has happened to tennis in the last 10 years. I’m not saying this just because I’m in Madrid. It’s incredible. We are very lucky to have him. “I’m happy that he’s back, because when he was away, tennis was more boring,” said the former world number 1, who also had glowing words towards Rafa Jodar.
“Now Jódar has also appeared. Rafa Nadal changed everything. He came out suddenly and changed Spanish tennis. I would see him and say, ‘How can he do that?’ “In the United States we haven’t won a Grand Slam for a long time, and Nadal alone has already won 22,” McEnroe commented.
This is not the first time that the winner of four US Opens and three Wimbledons has spoken in glowing terms about Alcaraz and Spanish tennis.
“Rafa Jódar is doing very well, he just needs a little rest. It has had a very rapid progression and we will see what happens in the coming years. In general, Spanish tennis is in an excellent moment. Spain has a very great history of tennis and has always produced great players,” he said last week during his presence at the first inclusive Sanitas Foundation Masters in Madrid together with the Argentine Gabriela Sabatini held at the Caja Mágica.
“Carlos Alcaraz is a very good player, very complete, and Jódar is also playing very well now. In America we have to study what is happening in Spain a little more carefully because before they had Rafa Nadal, now they had Carlos Alcaraz and Rafa Jódar and we need better players,” he said.
“We all hope that after Nadal’s time, Alcaraz has good luck with injuries and will be available for the next ten years. It would be amazing. And Rafa Jódar has a lot to live for. I say the same as Carlos. “Both of them should try to follow in the footsteps of Rafa Nadal,” said McEnroe, who gave his point of view about the Davis Cup in Bologna.
“If Carlos Alcaraz plays in the final phase of the Davis Cup, Spain would be a favorite for the title“he noted.
