Italy, maximum power in Davis Cup: multiple figures on the circuit, champions and a historic present
Unmatched and almost unrepeatable. This is how the present of Italian tennis can be classified, which is experiencing a unique moment in its history and is reflected in its performances in the Davis Cup. Recently, Filippo Volandri’s team defeated Belgium 2-0, in Bologna, and reached the final of the competition for the third consecutive year. This time, without its two top figures: Jannik Sinner (2nd in the world ranking) and Lorenzo Musetti (8th).
The triumphs of Matteo Berrettini (56th), against Raphael Collignon (86th) by 6-3 and 6-4, and of Flavio Cobolli (22nd), against Zizou Bergs (43rd) by 6-3, 6-7 (5) and 7-6 (15), were enough to deposit themselves again in the definition (wait for Spain or Germany), equaling what Australia had done between 1999 and 2001. The current two-time champion of the competition reached this stage for the tenth time in its history.
However, Italy’s current situation is not only seen in the Davis Cup. Going back in time, until the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Sinner’s loss at that time did not alter the results of the European team: Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini won gold in women’s doubles, while Musetti won bronze in men’s singles.
In Grand Slam tournaments, himself Sinner has four trophies in his record, added in the last two seasons: two Australian Open, one Wimbledon and one US Open. On the women’s side, Paoliniin addition to what was mentioned above in the Olympics, remains within the 10 best in the world (8th) and accumulate two finals of majorboth lost, but arriving consecutively in 2024: Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli They are two other figures from their country. Together they played three matches for a GS title, although they fell short: Australian Open 2024 and 2025 and Roland Garros 2024. Bolelli, for his part, was champion in Melbourne in 2015, while Vavassori established himself alongside his compatriot Errani in the mixed doubles at the US Open 2024 and 2025 and Roland Garros 2025.
