Franco Colapinto, on his future: “It is very difficult to know”
The Argentine spoke at the press conference prior to the Abu Dhabi GP and was asked about 2025, the year in which he will not have a seat at Williams.
The closing of the nine-race program in Formula 1 that Williams put together for Franco Colapinto has arrived. The finale will be at the Abu Dhabi GP, the same track where he turned for the first time on a top category car during the 2023 rookie tests. It was known in advance that in 2025 the Grove team will have Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz as starters and for the Buenos Aires native they have the reserve position. Although there were negotiations for Colapinto to move to another team and have a full-time seat in the 76th season, the doors were closing and everything indicates that he will remain as a tester and substitute for the English team. Already installed in Yas Marina, where the last event of 2024 will begin this Friday, Franco was consulted about his future.
“It is very difficult to know, it is impossible”said. And he made it clear that his goal is to perform in the best way in Abu Dhabi, especially taking into account that he is coming from three very complicated races, with a double blow in Brazil, another accident in Las Vegas and lack of competitiveness in Qatar, competition in which he abandoned in the first corner when he was involved in a carom started by Nico Hülkenberg and Esteban Ocon. “There’s still one race left with Williams. I’m really excited to be here in Abu Dhabi, where I did some laps in the Williams for the first time last year after the race, so it’s exciting to be back here where it all started.”he said. He added: “I try to stay away from conversations. I’m looking to enjoy the moment and now it’s my last race, so I’m trying to do the best I can for the team. “They did a great job, they deserve it, and I still have a weekend ahead of me with Williams, so I’m just trying to enjoy the moment and let’s see after the race what happens next year.”
Regarding his goals for the competition at Yas Marina, he noted: “I want to end the year on a good note. I think the team deserves that. They have worked hard all year, especially the last couple of races. They deserve a good result and I think finishing the year well is very important for all of us.. “The last three races were pretty tough, but I’m sure we can recover here and have a good weekend.”
Colapinto took advantage of the end of the year to take stock of his 2024 time in F1: “It was my dream come true since I started in Monza. I knew a lot was going to happen. I had to learn and move forward, many times you are only as good as your last race in Formula 1, but overall, I think I did a good job and tried to maximize the opportunity. “Las Vegas was complicated and being hard on myself I made a mistake, those are the moments where I look back and I could have avoided a mistake.”
