Franco Colapinto and his pure reflection miracle in Australia
The Argentine pilot found Liam Lawson stopped in the middle of the game and managed to avoid him just enough.
The start of the Australian GP, the first date of the 2026 World Championship, marked a large part of Franco Colapinto’s competition. On the one hand, it left one of the images that will surely occupy a place in the year-end yearbook and, on the other, it left all of the Argentine’s chances in the competition mortgaged.
As soon as the traffic lights went out, Liam Lawson’s Racing Bulls stood still in the middle of the grid, there in eighth place, far from the 16th place occupied by the Argentine. Colapinto was in full acceleration and suddenly met the New Zealander. Purely on reflex, Franco swerved to the right and put his Alpine down the thin corridor that was left between Lawson’s car and the wall. Not a pin fit into either side.
That wonderful save was great. The bad thing was that The team made an unusual mistake just before starting. A mechanic approached and touched the car when it was already close to the car. For this reason, Colapinto received a very harsh penalty: 10 seconds of stop and go, one of the harshest penalties, only surpassed by exclusion. That left him far from any chance of fighting for points.
