Etcheverry came back from an adverse match, debuted with victory in Athens and will face a favorite for the title
Tomas Etcheverry had a triumphant premiere in the Athens ATP 250. The Argentinian came back from an adverse match versus the American Mackenzie McDonald and took the victory 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) and 6-3. In this way he qualified for the second round of the Hellenic tournament and The next challenge will be to face one of the favorites for the title.
The world number 60 started the match at a disadvantage. The North American, who arrived from the qualy and is located outside the Top 100, tipped the balance in his favor in the first set after staying a very tight sleeve and without breaks in the tie-breaker.
However, Etcheverry managed to come back in the second set. In a procedure almost identical to the first part of the match, equality persisted until the tiebreaker, which on this occasion was left to the albiceleste with great ease. In the definition, the hierarchy and the difference were noted.
The Argentine needed just one break against McDonald in the third set and held his serve without major complications to win the match. He only had one break against which he was able to overcome to close the match with his serve in the last games of the party.
This way, Etcheverry extended his stay in Athens with a pass to the second round. His next rival will be one of the best seeds and favorite for the title, Alexandre Muller. The Frenchman, 28 years old and ranked No. 43, was the Argentine’s executioner at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro 2025 in a tight match.
