Edinson Cavani terminates contract with Boca Juniors
The Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani (39 years old) terminated the contract that united him with the Boca Juniors from Argentina, so he will not begin preparation for the new season and will leave the squad, as club sources told EFE this Thursday.
The blue and gold club begins preparation for the new season this Thursday without Cavaniwho was unable to celebrate any title and in 2026 played very few games as a result of a sustained back injury.
The termination of the contract, which linked the Uruguayan with Boca until December 2026, came by mutual agreement with the leadership and on good terms, in the context of the versions that indicate that the new coach, Rodolfo ‘Vasco’ Arruabarrena -not yet officially presented but for days working at the club’s facilities-, I was not going to take it into account.
The departure of Cavani, 39 years old and until last month wearing the number 10 ‘xeneize’, joins that of the experienced Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera and at least five other members of the squad in a purification process with a view to a second semester in which Boca will compete for the Copa Sudamericana, the Clausura Tournament and the Argentine Cup.
The attacker added 28 goalsthree assists, twelve yellow cards and one red in 81 matches disputed in Boca, where he was captain several times.
Since his arrival in July 2023his level went from high to low: he touched glory in the Copa Libertadores that same year, during which he was decisive with so many keys but lost to Fluminense of Brazil; suffered an early farewell in the group zone of the 2025 Club World Cup, with a draw against the weak Auckland City of New Zealand; and this season they only played two goalless draws.
Boca returns to work from this Thursday at the Ezeiza sports facility with a view to a season marked by pressure from the fans after the disappointment in the Copa Libertadores, which left the team in third place in its group and sent it to the Sudamericana.
