Cuba establishes record with 26 players in lists of the opening day

There were 265 players of 18 nations and territories outside the 50 states among the 954 players in the active charts of the opening day.

The percentage of born outside the 50 states remained at 27.8 %, matching its lowest level since 2016.

There were 265 players of 18 nations and territories outside the 50 states among the 954 players in the active chart lists and in the lists of injured, restricted and inactive, the commissioner’s office said on Friday.

The total of Cuba exceeded its previous 23 in 2016, 2017 and 2022. The total of Japan was the largest since 13 in 2012.

The general percentage coincided with last year and dropped by 28.5 % in 2023, which was the lowest since 27.5 % in 2016. It has remained in the range of 26-29.8 % since 2002, reaching its maximum point in 2017.

The total number of international players was the highest room, behind 291 of 2020 (when there were extended active templates of 30 men), the 275 of 2022 (when there were extended active templates of 28 men) and the 270 of 2023.

The Dominican Republic led countries outside the USbelow 108 last year and 110 of 2020. The 13 of Canada equalized their record since 17 of 2013.

Venezuela was second with 63followed by Cuba (26), Puerto Rico (16), Canada (13), Japan (12), Mexico (11), Curacao and Panama (four), South Korea (three), Aruba, Australia and Colombia (two) and Bahamas, Brazil, Germany, Honduras, Nicaragua and South Africa (one each).

Atlanta’s receiver Chadwick Tromp joined the San Diego Xander Bogaerts box to give Aruba two players for the first time.

Jung Hoo Lee, from San Francisco, and Jesús Luzardo, from Philadelphia, appeared on the list as “several”, read for being born in Japan and being of South Korean ancestry and Luzardo for being born in Peru and being of Venezuelan ancestry.

Houston and San Diego headed the list of teams with 16 international players each, and the stars shared the leadership for the fifth consecutive season. They were followed by Atlanta (14), the New York Mets (13) and Baltimore and Miami (12 each).

The 18 nations and territories outside the US equalized last year and were three from the record, established in 2018 and matched in 2022.
