Paul He returned to his home state of North Carolina for the Clippers’ game against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday. Paul He did not speak before the game, in which he had three points and eight assists in the Clippers’ 131-116 victory.
Nicknamed the “Point God”, Paul He is the NBA’s active leader in assists and steals, and is second all-time in both, behind only John Stockton. He has led the league in assists per game five times and in steals per game in six seasons. He averaged more than ten assists in seven seasons.
Paul He was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft by New Orleans out of Wake Forest and has averaged 16.9 points and 9.2 assists per game throughout his career. He and LeBron James are the only two players in NBA history to reach 20,000 points and 10,000 assists.
He spent six years with the Hornets before a famously voided trade to the Los Angeles Lakers brought him to the Clippers. Paul He teamed with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan and gave rise to the Clippers’ ‘Lob City’ era, which gave the franchise its longest and most sustained streak of success.
After six years with the Clippers, Paul He was traded to the Houston Rockets and was paired with James Harden. Although the Rockets had great success in the regular season, they failed to excel in the postseason, being eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in consecutive seasons.
After two years in Houston, Paul He was traded to Oklahoma City in a deal that sent Thunder franchise centerpiece Russell Westbrook to Houston as part of the fallout from Paul George’s trade to the Clippers to join Kawhi Leonard. Paul He only spent one season in Oklahoma City, but during his time there, he mentored young Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and helped the Thunder reach the postseason.
The season of Paul in Oklahoma City was followed by three seasons with the Phoenix Suns. His time in Phoenix was notable for the only participation of Paul in the NBA Finals (2021), a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games.
Two seasons after that Finals loss, Paul He landed on the Warriors, playing one season for the same franchise that had been a constant annoyance for him. After playing primarily as a reserve for the first time in his career, Paul He left for the San Antonio Spurs to provide a veteran presence last season to a rebuilding team led by Victor Wembanyama.
Paulwho will turn 41 in May, rejoined the Clippers in the offseason and has appeared in 10 games.
