Campos wins the first stage of the Volta a Portugal

The Portuguese Francisco Camposfrom Team Tavira/Crédito Agrícola, beat the Spaniard this Thursday Daniel Caviafrom Burgos-BH, in the final stretch and won the victory in the first stage of the 87th edition of the Return to Portugal cycling.

Campos surpassed Cavia by just a few centimeters in the final sprint and completed the 157.1 kilometers that linked the town of Lourinhã with Sintra, in the metropolitan area of ​​Lisbon, in a time of 3 hours, 39 minutes and eight seconds.

The Burgos-BH cyclist came second, while Campos’ teammate, Carlos Salgueiro, came third, both with the same time.

Although he narrowly missed the podium of the day, Rui Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates) managed, thanks to his fourth place and second place obtained yesterday in the prologue, to take the lead in the competition and snatch the yellow jersey from his teammate Julius Johansen.

Also among the top ten of the day were the Dutchman from Euskaltel-Euskadi – the other Spanish team in competition – Axel van der Tuuk, and the Argentine Tomás Contte (Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé), in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

The Basque team is having a good start in the Vuelta a Portugal, and Van der Tuuk is fifth overall, followed by his teammate Txomin Juaristi, who placed 17th in the stage.

Also in the fight for the yellow jersey is Team Emirates’ Spaniard Adrià Pericas, the 35th to cross the finish line in Sintra, who occupies ninth place in the general classification and leads the youth classification.

In its second stage, the Volta a Portugal will head south, with a route of 180.4 kilometers between Sines and Albufeira, a mostly flat route that will be complicated by the heat that usually occurs in these Portuguese towns in summer.
