Caitlin Clark, great news on the stellar US list for the Berlin World Cup
The basketball team USA announced this Thursday the squad of twelve players, among which stand out Caitlin Clark -the great absentee in the last Olympic Games, those in Paris 2024-, Paige Bueckers and Breanna Stewart, who will defend their title as top favorites in the next Berlin World Cup, in September.
The most notable absence has been that of one of the best players in the WNBA league, Sabrina Ionescu.
USAwhich has won gold in the last four World Cups in a row, is paired in group C with China, Italy and the Czech Republic in the next World Cup to be held in Berlin from September 4 to 13 and, once again, are favorites to win the continental title again.
Of the team that became world champions in Sydney 2022, only the veterans repeat Stewart, Plum, Cooper, Gray and Wilson. The latter, precisely, was named ‘best player’ of the last World Cup.
The US list
The twelve summoned are Aliyah Boston (Indiana Fever), Paige Bueckers (Dallas Wings), Caitlin clark (Indiana Fever), Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx), Kahleah Copper (Phoenix Mercury), Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas Aces), Rhyne Howard (Atlanta Dream), Kelsey Plum (Phoenix Mercury), Angel Reese (Atlanta Dream), Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty), A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) and Jackie Young (Las Vegas Aces). Coach: Kara Lawson (Duke University).
Breanna Stewarta player for the New York Liberty – three-time Olympic champion and three-time world gold medalist – will become one of the only three American players to participate in at least four continental tournaments.
Likewise, up to seven of the players called up will debut in a World Cup with the United States: Boston, Bueckers, Clark, Collier, Howard, Reese and Young.
“This is an incredibly talented group that has earned the opportunity to compete in Berlin. Wearing the United States jersey is a privilegeand I know these 12 players will take on that responsibility as we look for another gold medal,” said legendary former player Sue Bird, in charge of announcing the list as general manager of the US women’s team.
‘Team USA’, which has not known defeat in World Cup events since 2006, will seek to continue expanding its historic record of achievements and add a new gold to the 11 already achieved.
