Ahead of the match against the Paraguayans, the Confederação Brasileira de Rugby made the decision to fire coach Emiliano Caffera and left Josh Reeves, the director of rugby, as interim coach for the moment. The Uruguayan took charge of Brazil’s men’s and women’s national teams in October 2023, successfully guiding Las Yaras to their first qualification for the World Cup which took place in England in 2025, and was looking to repeat the feat with Los Tupis.
His successor, Josh Reeves, temporarily replaced Caffera for the past four months as he was involved with the women’s team’s preparation for the World Cup and was therefore unable to devote his full attention to the men’s. The New Zealander led the Tupis to finish third in this year’s South American Championship and in their only test match in July, when they faced Argentina XV.
Brazil now heads to Paraguay to take on their South American rivals in the first of two matches, with the winner qualifying for the World Rugby Repechage, scheduled for November. The first leg will be on October 11 at the Estadio Héroes de Curupayty in Luque, while the return leg will be on the 18th at the Estádio Municipal Du Cambusano in Jacareí. It should be noted that the Confederação Brasileira de Rugby began the search for a new coach for its men’s and women’s teams, but no decision will be made until the end of the year.
