Borthwick loses a key piece in England to face Los Pumas in July
The outlook for England from what remains of Six Nations and the Nations Championship added a serious concern. It was confirmed that Ben Curryone of the regulars on Steve Borthwick’s third line, will miss what remainder of the first semester.
The third line will miss the remainder of the old continent’s national team tournament and would not make it to the matches against South Africa, Fiji and, fundamentally, the clash against Los Pumas. The Sale Sharks flanker announced that his season has come to an early close after undergoing his second operation of the cycle (the third in its hamstring so far in his career), news that shakes the plans of the Rosa team.
For the Argentine team, Curry’s absence is not a minor fact. The 27-year-old third row had established himself as the undisputed starter under Borthwick’s command during the 2024/25 season, being a decisive piece in both the Six Nations and the series that England won against Argentina last year.
The player himself used his social networks from Finland, where the intervention would have taken place, to communicate the news that marginalizes him from the remainder of the Premiership, the Champions Cup and the international tour. “It destroys me to say that my season is over…”said Curry, who despite the difficult emotional moment, tried to show resilience in the face of this new physical setback that has been haunting him for months.
The wing’s recovery has become a headache for England. After missing the November window and threatening a return in December, his initial inclusion in the Six Nations squad to undergo rehabilitation generated expectations that were eventually dashed. “It has been a difficult few months, however, I feel very positive about the next steps and I can’t wait to start rehabilitation.”added the Sale player, who has already been replaced in the national squad by Jack Kenningham.
With this scenario, Borthwick will have to continue tweaking a third line which had already been questioned after the defeats against Scotland, Ireland and Italy. Without the balance that Curry provides, England will arrive at the July meeting against Los Pumas with the obligation to rebuild a key part of the team that was widely surpassed in its last presentations. For Argentina, it will be an opportunity to take advantage of the doubts of a rival that loses one of its most regular soldiers in contact and recovering balls.
