Baskonia wants to take advantage of the departure of Xevi Pujol to Barça

Xevi Pujol will be Barça’s next sporting director, replacing Juan Carlos Navarro, but his landing at the Barça club will be a little more complicated than initially expected. Baskonia, with whom he has a contract until June 2028, has closed the exit door for him and is asking him for more than 300,000 euros for his freedom letter.

It would be an understandable move if it weren’t for the fact that the Vitoria club was determined to cut the Catalan at the end of this season. Despite the unexpected success in the Copa del Rey, Baskonia are not happy with the work of the Catalan executive.

Pujol has not completely settled into the Baskonia structure, which is experiencing a hidden civil war in its offices between the Catalan, official technical secretary, and the historic Alfredo Salazar, responsible for many of the Basque team’s big signings in recent decades. The latter advocates that his deputy, Juan Pedro Cazorla, be the one who takes over the sports management instead of the Catalan.

Only when Barça’s interest in Pujol became clear has Baskonia changed its position, going from opening the door to asking him for money to let him go. The two parties are very far from the agreement and everything suggests that the matter will end up in the hands of the lawyers.

Despite this disagreement, the arrival of Xevi Pujol to Barça is beyond any doubt. The agreement between the parties is total and will end up being finalized sooner or later once the Barça team finishes its season.
