Alonso: “If there is less straight, the better for us. But you still need power. Although the situation will be better than in Monza and Baku”
After the disaster of Aston Martin and Honda in Bakuone of the three circuits next to monza and vegas that both Alonso and the green team warned that it was one of the worst on the calendar for them due to its lack of power, the Silverstone team faces this week’s event and the following week, in Malaysia and Singapore, with better expectations.
The team, through the statements of Aston Martin track manager Mike Krack is more optimistic and he believes that a better side of his car will be seen on these tracks compared to Baku. But Alonso prefers to be cautious.
The Asturian warned in Baku that the lack of engine power will continue to be important. Even in Singaporea race that Fernando has indicated for weeks as the one that could be the best of the year for the weapons he has.
“If there is less straight, the better for us. But you still need power. That’s as far as you need it. Budapest depends less on power than Singapore. Although the situation will be better than in Monza and Baku. In addition, we have to do better as a team,” he said about the two events he will face in the next two weeks.
Budapest is less dependent on power than Singapore
We must not forget that in Sepang there are two long straights in a rowthe one that reaches the last curve, and the finish line, joined by a hairpin. The counterstraight has a total of 928 meters. The main one, 920. There, Fernando and his Honda engine can lose a lot of time per lap.
They will have to counteract this loss with the performance of their chassis in curves of all types. But be careful: because the lack of power also affects cornering, and above all, the energy management of the Honda power unit, another weak point.
On the other hand, in the Malaysia and Singapore events, the weight-reduced chassis (almost at the limit) presented in Baku can be of great help. Also the best aerodynamics of the last few months. Above all, in the race for a car that performs better on Sundays, with very good tire degradation as its main strength. But to take advantage of this good degradation, Alonso needs the tires to be rocks as happened in the last rounds. In a one-stop race, it is difficult for him to make a difference in that area. And to this we must add the chances of rain.
Krack: “It should be better for us”
For its part, Mike Krack He believes that things will be better in Malaysia, and above all, in Singapore.
“Baku has only been the first race of a triplet. Now we go to Sepang, a very different circuit in terms of downforce requirements, power, resistance, weight, center of gravity… All these things are important for the behavior of the car and it will be very hot. I think it will test the cooling of all the elements. The same will happen in Singapore, but I also think it will be very physical for the drivers,” Krack commented in statements after the Azerbaijan GP, at a press conference.
But it should be better for us (in Malaysia). There are also straights, but there are corners with high downforce and low speed corners. And then Singapore, it’s probably a little better for us

“But it should be better for us (in Malaysia). There are also straights, but there are high downforce corners and low speed corners. So I hope we will be more competitive than in Baku. And then Singapore, it will probably be a little bit better for us.”
“We knew it was going to be a tough weekend in Baku. I think it’s on the list with Monza and Las Vegas, so we knew this was going to be tough. But now we have to learn and try to apply what we’ve learned to Malaysia, where it might be the first time we race in the rain because it often rains. But overall, we’ll probably be in a better position.”
