FIFA’s momentous decision
The FIFA authorized the members of his Council to review “key documents” related to the failed project of a commercial company open to private investors (FFE), which triggered a serious crisis within the world governing body, a source close to the matter informed the AFP agency on Tuesday.
“FIFA has informed the members of your Councilincluding all vice presidents, who will have access to key documents relating to the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project,” the source told AFP.
The members of the Council, who were informed on Monday in a letter sent by the FIFA Secretary General, Mattias Grafstrommust “express their interest in the next two weeks” to review the documents, “in person and under specific conditions”, at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, according to the same source.
The FIFA initiative comes at a time when UEFA, the main opponent of the FFE project, was finally abandoned by the president of the organization itself. FIFA, Gianni Infantinofacing strong public opposition, has filed a lawsuit in Florida to force FIFA’s American affiliates to hand over a series of documents related to the project, in preparation for a possible lawsuit in Switzerland for “unfair management.”
Since the FFE project was revealed just after the 2026 World Cupthe UEFA has been embroiled in a power struggle with Infantino, who is running for re-election in March 2027, but whose departure she wants.
In addition, UEFA has sent FIFA a series of questions about governance and has given the organization two weeks to respond, a deadline that the international federation considers “unrealistic.”
Having been under considerable pressure for some time, Infantino He now has a clear path to re-election. As the deadline for nominations approaches (18 November), UEFA has yet to find a credible candidate to challenge the Swiss-Italian president, who has been in office since 2016 and is seeking a fourth term.
He even received Infantino an important endorsement on October 23, when the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) finally gave him its support. This marks a radical turnaround, as the AFC, along with UEFA and the Confederation of North American and Caribbean Football (CONCACAF), were among Infantino’s staunchest opponents following the revelation of the FFE project.
The former Swiss international Ramon Vega has announced his intention to run as a candidate, but, for the moment, there is no indication that he has obtained the five endorsements necessary to do so.
