De Boer mocks Michel at Ajax: “He’s embarrassing”
In his first season on the bench of Ajax, Michel González tries to bring the Dutch team (5th) closer to the leadership of the Eredivisie. The former Girona coach has his followers and detractors, but if there is something that is being criticized, it is his lack of knowledge of the language. The Madrid native, in Girona, showed interest in speaking Catalan from the first day and managed, at least behind closed doors, to do it quite well.
It seems that in the Netherlands it is more complicated. The fact is that he has been there for more than three months and he does not feel comfortable with English. Two former footballers have reproached him for this, such as the former Barça player Frank De Boer and the former colchonero Toby Alderweireld, who have thrown a dart at him.
The Madrid native had difficulty expressing himself after the painful 2-1 defeat against Hajduk Split, yesterday in a Conference League match. “I wonder how he communicates with his team. In English or in Spanish? Many people don’t understand Spanish, they understand English better, but if you speak like that…”, said Alderweireld, who also does not believe that an interpreter is the solution: “It is not understood the same, apart from the fact that you have to transmit passion…”, he told ‘Ziggo Sport’. Frank de Boer supported him with a scathing criticism: “It’s embarrassing to sit and listen to it.”
De Boer also felt bad that Michel brought on Jofre Torrents in the second half in Split: “You put in a left-back who has never played before… I don’t want to blame him, because it’s not just his fault, but fielding that nineteen-year-old boy for the first time in such a hostile environment… Honestly, I would have preferred to see Wijndal.”
