Fernando Alonso: “This year there are circuits that have been murdered. There is no other category in which you have to go slow to be fast”
Fernando Alonso continues without confirming or ruling out its continuity in Formula 1 for 2027. He already said in Madring that a lot would depend on the update of the current regulations for next season, since he is not at all satisfied with the weight that has been given to the management of electrical energy.
At the Media Day of the Azerbaijan GP, Fernando Alonso not only spoke about the problem, but even proposed certain solutions to make the top category much more entertaining for everyone. And yes, everything involves reducing the electrical power of current cars.
“In all the cars I drive, going fast is natural: you brake later, accelerate earlier, take more risks and learn during the process. With each lap you go faster and faster because you know the car and its limits better. It’s pure driving instinct. With the current regulations it doesn’t happen like that. You have to think a lot before driving because everything is programmed by the regulations, the engineering, the simulations… There is much less fun driving these cars“he said to the press in statements reported by Motorsport.com.
“There is no other category in motorsports where you have to drive slow to go fast. A possible solution? For me, I would perhaps reduce the maximum battery power to use it for longer periods. Silverstone, an incredible circuit, is no longer fun. Spa was almost embarrassing when passing through Eau Rouge; Suzuka, the 130R… There are circuits that have been murdered this year“.
What to expect from Baku?
Despite having the latest great novelty of the season in the AMR26, Fernando Alonso assured that the Azerbaijan GP will be another complicated weekend. The weight reduction will not be enough to alleviate the tremendous power deficit that Aston Martin has with the disappointing Honda engine.
“It’s not the best track for us, it’s one of the tracks we have on the calendar. It will be difficult, like Las Vegas. It will be difficult to score points and get past Q1but we cannot control things that are far from our control. There will be some very slow cars until the battery comes in, because you will go at 200km/h and others at 350. We must make sure it is safe,” he said about the speed differential that can be seen on the eternal Baku straight.
What there is no news about is its continuity for next year. The Spaniard already said in Madring that we should not expect news soon, although he also admitted that he is in constant conversations with Domenicali, CEO of F1, and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, boss of the FIA, to try to improve the category. However, he did not give many more details. “I don’t have all the information. We have to trust in the sport. I will continue driving, in F1 or in other categories.
