The three changes that will be made in Madring, already on the table
He Spanish F1 GP you should think about 2027 to improve a key aspect: the overtaking. The track made its debut in F1 last weekend with a race in which there was not the expected chaos, and in which, above all, there was a lack of attacking actions due to the enormous difficulty in overtaking in its curves.
For this reason, many pilots highlighted that it was possible to make small changes that could lead to a significant improvement in this aspect for next year. And the circuit, aware of the need to make these modifications, is very open to doing so. They will listen to the pilots’ proposals and, together with the FIA, will work to resolve this crucial point.
After the drivers’ words to the media, with clear ideas of how the circuit can be improved by 2027, in which they also highlighted the enormous potential of this challenging and complicated track, the specialized media ‘The Race’ revealed the changes that the Madring organizers are planning for 2027.
According to the aforementioned media, in the coming weeks there will be talks between the track, FIA, drivers and teams to finalize these improvements, which will affect three crucial areas of this track.
The proposed improvements
The first improvement, the one that the majority of drivers indicated, was made in turn 5. There, as several drivers said, the shape of the curved outer barrier did not help, generating a funnel at the end of the turn that prevented two cars from being placed in parallel to fight for that turn.
Thus, the first idea would be to widen and modify the entrance to the chicane of 5 and 6 in order to encourage a battle for position. As Carlos said, that is the clearest point, because it is preceded by a straight line.
This type of braking in curves eliminates any possibility of drawing different lines and going up the inside.
“That kind of corner braking eliminates any possibility of drawing different lines and going up the inside. So it’s a shame and maybe a little oversight,” Bearman said of that Turn 5.
Maybe 10 and the area of turns 5, 6 and 7… It would be nice to have something there, but I think there is a limitation because we are going under the road, there is a bridge
“We probably need to see with the FIA what we can do. Maybe 10 and the area of turns 5, 6, 7. It would be good to have something there, but I think there is a limitation because we are going under the road, there is a bridge there,” Fernando Alonso argued in this regard.
We would have to try to find something in turn five. And if it is not in turn five, we have to look at turn one and turn thirteen, but it is clear that turn five is the place where there are the most options after a long straight
The second improvement would be designed for turn 13, the braking after La Monumental. That corner is of medium speed and does not have strong braking as would be needed to offer attacking opportunities. Thus, they must ensure that this curve has greater braking and they could do so with a slower curve, that is, by making that curve tighter.
And finally, they are thinking about widening turn 20 (of 22)at the final part of the track. At that point they should move the barriers, widening the circuit at that point, to allow the drivers more room to attack at the entrance to the corner.

“It’s a fantastic circuit and, honestly, I think everyone did a great job with the circuit as it is, especially in qualifying. But for the race, no big changes are needed, I think with one small change or two small changes they could significantly change the race we have here,” said Leclerc, for example.
Verstappen had the same opinion, ensuring that the organization had done a great job and that he already knew how to improve the problem of overtaking.
The FIA did not want to make the changes before
According to ‘The Race’, the Madring circuit had already proposed some of these changes before the Grand Prix, for fear that it would not be easy to overtake. However, the FIA, always according to ‘The Race’, would have decided to postpone these possible changes for the 2027 race due to lack of time and the difficult homologation processes.
The Madring circuit was already arriving with just enough time due to the heavy and constant rains last winter, so the FIA preferred that these modifications be reconsidered for the 2027 event so that the homologation time would not affect the final construction deadlines of the track.
The pilots were very optimistic about it. They consider that a few changes can turn a complicated and very technical and challenging circuit, very fun, into a turn into also a track that can give good races and fights. They see great potential in him.
