Enric Mas: “The best defense can be a good attack”

Enric Mas (Movistar), leader of the Vuelta, acknowledged that in this week’s mountain stages “the best defense can be a good attack” and admitted that wearing the red jersey “is something very special and very nice.”

“It may be that the best defense is a good attack, but I have gained time and I think it is the rivals who have to cut back, not only me, but others. I will try to be with the best and continue as before,” Mas said.

On his second day with the red jersey the sensations were special for the Balearic cyclist.

“Wearing the red jersey is something very special and beautiful, it’s a feeling I’ve never had. I hope to enjoy every second of what’s happening to me these days,” he commented.

Despite the difference of 1.18 minutes over the Slovenian Primoz Roglic and 1.39 over the Austrian Felix Gall, Enric Mas confesses that the nerves “are always there, since anything can happen at any time.”

“I’m always nervous. In sport, anything can happen at any time, especially in cycling. Healthy nervousness is always present,” he commented.

Regarding the day with the finish line in Elche de la Sierra, he said “a very tough stage, exhausting for everyone. Tomorrow there will be another sprint and then the mountain will arrive. We cannot get lost because surely some of the favorites will try to take advantage of their opportunity,” he concluded.
