Spain beats Argentina and loses to Australia to finish sixth in Singapore
This Sunday, February 1, the Spanish rugby 7 team finished sixth in the Singapore tournament, third stage of the regular phase of the World Series, after a second day in which they defeated Argentina (26-12) and lost to Australia by the same result.
The couple made up of Enrique Bolinches and Jeremy Trevitchik on the left side of the Spanish attack marked the differences at the start in the duel against Argentina, since two identical actions – the Valencian striker’s offload for the Marbella wing – meant two marks for the ‘Lions’ in the first half (14-5).
Marcos Moneta had shortened the distance for Argentina with a seventy-meter run and, at the beginning of the second period, Trevithick completed his hat trick and the Argentine ‘Rayo’ scored his second try just before Juanchin Ramos sealed the Spanish victory after breaking Lucho González with a counterfoot (26-12).
Spain faced Australia in the duel for fifth place that started in an unbeatable way, as Ramos palmed the center kick towards Josep Serreswhich divided the rival defense and gave way to Trevithick, who set his sixth mark of the weekend, which has made him the best scorer of the tournament.
The ocean sailors reacted, however, with solvency to this early disadvantage with marks of Dietrich Roache, Aden Ekanayake and Henry Hutchison that left the game almost sentenced to halftime (5-19), before Anton Legorburu and William Cartwright they sealed the score in the second half (12-26).
The ten points that Spain adds with its sixth place in Singapore raise its total for the season to twenty-six, allowing it to leave the eighth and final position in the table, which is now occupied by Great Britain with twenty-two.
