The Netherlands will host the European Track Cycling Championships in 2028

The Dutch city of Apeldoorn will host the elite category European Track Cycling Championships in 2028while the Zolder velodrome (Belgium) will have the first option to organize the 2030 edition, as announced by the European Cycling Union (UEC) in a statement.

The choice of Apeldoorn will also have a special character for Dutch cycling, since the Royal Netherlands Cycling Federation (KNWU) will turn one hundred years old in 2028. The championship will be integrated into the program of centenary celebrations and will return to the city some Europeans that it already organized in 2024. The 2028 edition is scheduled for the month of February.

The agreement is part of the UEC’s collaboration with the federations and organizers of the Netherlands and Belgium, two countries with a long tradition in track cycling.

Apeldoorn has the Omnisport velodrome, a regular venue for major international competitions, while Zolder has a new velodrome that has already hosted European and world championships in lower categories.

“2028 and 2030 will be two especially important years for European cycling. The Netherlands and Belgium are two reference nations, not only in Europe but throughout the world, thanks to their culture, tradition, organizational capacity and quality of their infrastructure,” said the president of the UEC, Enrico Della Casa.

The election will also allow the Europeans to be linked to two important dates: the centenary of the Dutch federation in 2028 and the bicentennial of Belgium in 2030.
