UEFA updates the use of champion patches on its shirts
Last week we already told you in M.D. that among the updates to the UEFA clothing regulations is the possibility that referees can wear advertising on their shirts from the next 2026-2027 season. Either on the sleeves or on the back but never on the front. But these regulations also officially include and, with mandatory compliance, the use of the patches that the European champion countries, male and female, must wear; as well as the winners of the League of Nations.
As for the current champion of the Eurocup, condition that Spain has right now, the rule makes it clear that “the Eurocup champion’s shield provided by UEFA must be displayed” in three mandatory moments. Starting with “the next qualifying phase for the FIFA World Cup”, as has happened this season in the phase that has allowed the presence of the United States, Mexico and Canada in the current World Cup where they debut this afternoon against Cape Verde. In addition, it must also carry the patch “the next qualifying phase and the final phase of the Euro Cup.” Qualification phase that will take place from March to November next year. The final tournament will be played in the summer of 2028 in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. And finally he must also wear it in “the next UEFA Nations League, both in the group stage and in the final phase.” Tournament that starts in this new edition next September and whose final phase is scheduled for June 9 to 13.
The same thing happens with the European women’s champion team, a condition that England defends after beating Spain in the final of the last edition last summer on English soil. In her case, she has also had to wear this patch in the qualifying phase for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, where she placed second behind Spain and which will force her to have to play in a play-off. And it must also be worn “in the qualifying phase and the final phase of the UEFA Women’s European Championship.” Tournament to be played in Germany in 2029.
And finally there is the current one in the Nations League, a condition that Portugal defends after beating Spain in the last final from a penalty shootout. And he must wear this champion patch, as we explained before, throughout the next Nations League that starts in September. Both in “the following UEFA Nations League, both in the group stage and in the final tournament”, as well as in the “qualifying phase and the final tournament of the European Football Championship.”
