Matías Moroni: his complicated time in CUBA, the chances of a return to Villa de Mayo and his ideal retirement from Los Pumas
In a talk with Augustine Creevy, Matias Moroni spoke about his complicated last step through CUBA and opened the possibility of a return to the Villa de Mayo clubas well as about What would be the ideal scenario for his retirement from professional rugby and Los Pumas?.
As he had already mentioned in March in an interview with AM850 Fans, Moroni said that the situation began after being left out of a call for the Argentine national team. At that moment he decided to prioritize his physical and mental recovery, while looking to stay active. “I didn’t decide, I had to return to CUBA. Among all my stress, I was left without a club twice in the 2024/25 season, from December to June. I arrived happy, I had played with Los Pumas every game. I was not called up to the Rugby Championship and the CUBA coach, Lucas Piña, asked me if I wanted to play and I told him no, that I wanted to focus on Los Pumas”he commented.
Then he added: “I went on vacation for three weeks and I started training in case an opportunity arose. I told the coach (Piña) that I was going to play again. I played four games in CUBA and I didn’t have a good time in all that time. It was difficult for me to get up to train, to go to the club. Training at night was very hard”. Regarding the complications he went through during this time at the Villa de Mayo club, the back explained: “My head was in Australia and my body was in Núñez at 9 at night. My body and my mind did not want to be there. I love my club, I know that I am going to retire there happy, but at that moment I did not want to be there”.
On the other hand, Moroni referred to what his ideal farewell to the Argentine team and professional rugby would be like, and flirted with a return to CUBA once this event occurred. “Hopefully I’ll be lucky enough to retire like few have been able to, in Los Pumas, but without the coach telling me ‘you’ve come this far’… I would love to be able to retire on the field. The ideal scenario would be to retire in the World Cup, from professional rugby, from everything, and then return to CUBA and retire. If today the Los Pumas coach tells me ‘Tute, we don’t take you into account’, I’ll probably turn around.”closed the center.
