Tomás Martín Etcheverry (30th in the world ranking) was more than up to the task in his Monte Carlo round of 16 duel against Carlos Alcaraz (1st). It was a triumph for the Spanish, but in a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6 and 6-3, in two hours and 23 minutes of play. The match played by the Argentine was so good that the world number 1 himself was full of praise for his rival.

On the network, at the time of the greeting between the two after the end of the match, Alcaraz told Etcheverry: “Tomy, very good game. how great you are“. It should be noted that it was the first confrontation between the two on the ATP circuit, they had only met at the Challenger level, in 2020 (victory of the Murcian in straight sets).

The tennis player from La Plata continues to grow after his title – first – at the ATP 500 in Rio. He is virtually number 29 on the planet and continues to get closer to the Top 20, a goal he set before Roland Garros.

Alcaraz, for his part, remains firm in defending his title and the top of the standings. In the Monte Carlo quarterfinals, he will face the always difficult Kazakh Alexander Bublik (11th).
