Catcher Brandon Valenzuela debuts with Toronto Blue Jays and becomes the 153rd Mexican-born player in Major League history

Valenzuela, who debuts at 25 years and 185 days, is the fourth player from Hermosillo to debut since the 2023 season, in which three other players born in Mexico — Mexicali, Los Mochis and Tijuana — have appeared in the “Big Top.”

The Blue Jays catcher, who was activated on Saturday when his compatriot, the Tijuana native, was placed Alexander Kirk On the 10-day disabled list, he appeared in the starting and ninth batting order in a 3-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

By debuting with a hit, he is the second player from Hermosillo in history to open his career with a hit in his first appearance at the plate, after the pitcher Elmer Dessenswho debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates given an RBI hit against Pedro Martinez.

Valenzuela is the eleventh player born in Hermosillo to play in the Major Leagues, after Francisco Barrios, Dessens, Erubiel Durazo, Luis Carlos GarcíaIsaac Paredes, Luis GonzalezCésar Salazar, Irving López, Alan Rangel and Omar Cruz.

The streak of years of those born in Mexico making their debut in the Major Leagues was extended to 12, since since the 2015 season at least one has debuted per season, after no debutants were registered in 2013 and 2014.
