Capibaras turned it around at the end and beat Yacare 13-12 in Paraguay
Yacare XV beat Capibaras 13-12 on the hour on the fourth date of the Super Rugby Americasat the Héroes de Curupayty Stadium in Paraguay, thanks to a Ignacio Dogliani’s penalty at the endafter having been at a disadvantage for almost the entire match.
The scoring opened early, at 4 minutes, when the scrum half Juan Cruz Strada broke the rival defense and left alone to score the first try of the match, which was converted by Joaquín Lamas. Shortly after, the fly-half himself was unable to widen the difference with two long-distance penalties for the home team.
Halfway through the first half came one of the most outstanding plays of the initial stage: Lamas intercepted a pass and undertook a spectacular run to support Yacare’s second try, although on this occasion the conversion failed. Capibaras reacted in the 28th minute with a try from Manuel Cúneo after a line and maul well executed by the team, but then Juan Bautista Baronio failed to convert. In this way, Yacaré went to halftime with a 12-5 advantage in its favor.
In the second half, Yacare had opportunities to widen the gap, but lacked precision. Four minutes into the second half, Joaquín Lamas deflected a long-range penalty and, shortly after, Capibaras was left with one less for Ignacio Orsetti’s yellow card after an infraction in an attacking scrum. However, the local team could not take advantage of those ten minutes with numerical superiority to extend the advantage. The match remained locked and only in the 28th minute did Ignacio Dogliani have a chance to score for the visitors with a distant penalty that also did not find the woodwork, while in the 31st minute, Valentino Quatrocci also missed an attempt.
The game changed in the final stretch. At 33 minutes the home side saw Juan Mernes yellow. Two minutes later, Lautaro Cipriani scored the try for Capibaras, but Dogliani was unable to equalize the score with the conversion, as the ball hit one of the posts, but at the end he had revenge and hit a penalty that put the visitor ahead by the minimum 12-13, and sealed the victory after being behind on the scoreboard throughout the match.
