The official statement from the ATP for the players affected due to the conflicts in Dubai and Doha
The conflict in the Middle East continues to be a topic on the agenda around the world and causes a lot of concern in all areas, including tennis, given that the ATP 500 in Dubai recently took place and several players were stranded in the city. This? Because of the war problem that directly affects the recently mentioned city and Doha, among other places.
One of the most specific cases is Daniil Medvedev (11th in the world ranking)who was champion in Dubai in the last hours. The former world number 1 has not yet been able to travel to Indian Wells, the first Masters 1000 of the year, which will start in a few days. It should be noted that the Russian will have to defend the semifinals held in 2025 and this situation could affect him if he cannot appear.
Like Medvedev, other renowned players suffer the same: his compatriot Andrey Rublev (17th), the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor (25°), the Finn Harri Heliovaara (8th), the British Henry Patten (8th), the Salvadoran Marcelo Arevalo (6th) and the Croatian Mate Pavic (6th), finalists in doubles in the Emirati tournament, are also awaiting updates to embark on their respective trips. Added to this is Holger Rune (18th), who is still recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon and is in Doha.
Given this situation, the ATP issued a statement on its social networks about this delicate matter:
“The ATP is closely monitoring the evolving situation in the Middle East and maintains regular contact with our players, their support teams and relevant local authorities.
The health, safety and well-being of our players, staff and tournament workers are our priority. We confirm that a small number of players and members of their teams remain in Dubai following the conclusion of the recent ATP 500 event. They and their teams are staying in the official tournament hotels, where their immediate needs are being fully met.
We are in direct communication with those affected, as well as with the tournament organizers and security advisors. At this stage, travel arrangements remain subject to ongoing evaluation in line with airline operations and official guidance. We will continue to provide appropriate support to ensure players and their teams can depart safely when conditions allow.
We will continue to evaluate developments and provide updates as appropriate.“.
The Indian Wells main draw will begin next Wednesday, March 4.
