Mariano Navone (91º) ended its passage through Wimbledonwhere they said goodbye with ambivalent sensations. With a commendable effort and a technical capacity well adapted to a historically uncomfortable surface for Argentines, it completed a positive tournament. However, his good level was not enough to stay in the race. Fell tightly to the Spanish Pedro Martínez (52º) by 7-5, 7-5 and 7-6 (6), in 3h16m of play.

Are statistics for analyzing a party? Many times, yes. And, of course, they function as a complement to provide concrete data to the subjective look of the editor. For example, in this duel, Martínez added just 19 points with winning shots, while the one born on July 9 connected 44. However, that would be to see only part of the movie. The 52nd of the ranking worn Rafael Nadal on brick dust: he resisted from beginning to end, did not lower his arms when things did not come out and never gave a point for lost. He did not force quick definitions, but waited for the resolution to come from the other side of the network.

In that sense, Navone did not fear adopting the initiative. He went forward, he was encouraged to take the court and punish with the right and the reverse. However, just as in some moments he found a prize, in others he suffered anxiety and a cataract of united errors (60, against 33 of his rival).

In the first partial, the South American representative did not take advantage of his first chance of Break and immediately gave the service. Something similar happened in the second: he had two sets, but failed to specify them (in the last one, he had all the free terrain to punish with a parallel shot that went outside for a few centimeters). And in the third, even with a lot of perseverance and great attitude, he kept fighting but also escaped from details.

Beyond the fall, Andrés Dellatorre’s pupil made it clear that he has the tools to become better prepared next year. As a prize, some 45 key points for the ranking are taken from London, where it is located in the 82nd position of the live classification (+9).

For his part, Martínez awaits in the third round the winner of the duel between the Italian Jannik Sinner (1st) and the Australian Aleksandar Vukic (93º).
