39-0. Spain delivers against Belgium in Régis Sonnes’ debut as coach

The Spanish women’s rugby team was imposed this Saturday by 39-0 to Belgium in El Cantizal de Las Rozas (Madrid) and sealed a great debut for the new national coach, the Frenchman Régis Sonnes, in the first day of the European Championship.

The Lionesses came to the meeting looking to start a new stage with the debut of Régis Sonnes on the Spanish benches and with their sights set on doing a good job against the rookie Belgium for their aspirations of revalidating the title they achieved last season.

After the World Cup stage last August in which Spain did not achieve any victory in its three games, the team appeared against Belgium with a renewed face and a squad that is already thinking about the path to the next World Cup.

In front of them they had a Belgium that returned to the European Championship this year after having a great campaign and beating Germany and Finland in the Trophy, which helped them ascend to the second highest category of continental rugby, only behind the Six Nations.

After a very imprecise first ten minutes on the part of both teams, Spain managed to beat the goal line with the help of Masokowhich he took advantage of to rehearse after a getaway Amaia Erbina.

The first Spanish test was followed by another Amalia Argudowho was outstanding during the game, and, after receiving a ball in his field after a Belgian clearance, managed to avoid any rival that stood in his way to score one of the most spectacular tries of the game.

With the match already broken, Spain subjected Belgium to a gale in which the forwards led the way in a scrum and the three-quarter line executed the plan of Regis Sonnes with surgical precision against a Belgium that barely set foot on the Spanish field in the first half.

In this way, the León girls added three more tries before the break although they were not fine in front of the sticks, where only one conversion was achieved. Amalia Argudo after several failed opening attempts Naroa Azpitarte.

The second half of the match would start well for Régis Sonnes’ girls who, after a line kick, would form a group so that Nuria Jou Pons managed to land the ball on the goal line in a try that would not transform Ariadna Vergara.

After the last score, the Spanish would take their foot off the accelerator and, although without scoring, would besiege the Belgians in their field for more than thirty minutes. Taking advantage of an error in the strong Spanish defense, the Belgians managed to get within five meters of a try without much reward for their frustration.

Already in the last part of the match, Las Leonas would pose the ball one last time after the entire second half insisting and would be the one who was chosen MVP of the match. Amalia Argudoresponsible for adding two more points to the Spanish scoreboard to close their participation with a 39-0 victory.

Once the game was over, Sonnes was happy and highlighted the team’s first half: “The first half was very good, the intensity and our goal. Then we broke down physically which produced some physical deficiency but I am happy because they all played with four debuts.”

With this victory, Régis Sonnes makes his debut as a Hispanic coach in the best possible way and sends Spain to the top of the European Championship group in its quest to defend its title.

For her part, the MVP of the match, Amalia Argudo, pointed out that “the style of play and philosophy” works “perfectly” for them in addition to declaring that they have “all” enjoyed the clash against Belgium.
