- As expected, University of Oklahoma center Blake Griffin was the first selection in the NBA Draft held Thursday night in New York, selected by the Los Angeles Clippers. Memphis chose second and took Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet and Oklahoma City scooped up guard James Harden from Arizona State. - The Tampa Bay Rays took two of three games from the Philadelphia Phillies in their rematch of the 2008 World Series after winning 10-4 Thursday. Willy Aybar had three hits and three runs to lead the Rays to the win. The Florida Marlins also won big, beating slumping Baltimore 11-3 as Hanley Ramirez homered, had three hits and drove in five runs. - Cody Ross had three hits and the Florida Marlins won their fourth straight game, 5-2 over the Baltimore Orioles to push their record to one game over the .500 mark. The Tampa Bay Rays used solid pitching by Matt Garza to defeat Philadelphia 7-1 to square that series at a game apiece. - Tebow Named SEC's Top Male Athlete
- The Southeastern Conference has announced that Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has been named the SEC Male Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. Tebow is only the third Gator to receive this honor, joining quarterback Danny Wuerffel and swimmer Ryan Lochte. And, Tebow is only the fourth male athlete to win the award in back to back seasons. The Gator senior has won a Heisman Trophy and two national titles in his time at Florida and his team will be preseason ranked number one by just about everyone to start the 2009 campaign. more...
