The University of Florida baseball team tunes up for a game with rival Florida State tonight by beating Army 9-3 Monday night in Gainesville.
The game was close until Florida scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Daniel Pigott went 2 for 3 and freshman Austin Maddox had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Gators offensively. Preston Tucker also hit his first homer of the year to back the pitching of Anthony DeSclafani (2-1) who game up two runs pitching into the sixth inning. Jeff Barfield relieved and gave up only three hits and a run the rest of the way.
Now the 12-3 Gators focus on 13-2 Florida State, a team they lost to earlier this season in Tampa. The Seminoles are coming off a home weekend in which they lost two of three to number one ranked Virginia.
Still, the Seminoles come in hitting .334 as a team led by freshman Jayce Boyd and his .417 average. Fellow freshman Justin Gonzalez from Miami is right behind at .413 while Stephen Cardullo leads a balanced attack with 20 rbi.
Florida will pitch freshman Hudson Randall (2-0, 2.51 ERA) against FSU's Robert Benincasa (1-0, 1.64 ERA) tonight and the game can be heard live on Rock 104!
