The University of Florida women's basketball team is now 1-1 on the young season after losing 66-62 Tuesday night at home against nationally ranked Florida State.
Florida did not have much of an inside presence in the game because of FSU's bigs inside and the Gators were forced to shoot a lot of three point shots in the game. Unfortunately, Florida was only 9 of 31 from beyond the arc and their two sharpshooters, Steffi Sorensen and Jordan Jones, combined to shoot just 4 of 21 from long distance.
Despite this, the young Gators hung tough, leading 35-32 at halftime and never trailing by double digits in the game. It came down to the end though when Florida, trailing by three, could not get a shot to go down and the Seminoles rebounded to seal the win.
Meantime, the Gator men look to go 2-0 on the season when they host Georgia Southern tonight; AM 850 and Rock 104 will have live coverage starting at 6:25pm.
Georgia Southern (1-1) has a new coach in Charlton Young but a familiar face will come back to Gainesville in guard Willie Powers, who played for PK Yonge High School in Gainesville. The two teams have played in each of the last two years and the Eagles have played Florida tough both times in losses.
Powers is a junior guard averaging 14 points a game to lead the Eagles. Senior guard Antonio Hanson averages 10 a game and 6'8" junior Rory Spencer averages 11 points and 7 rebounds a game. Spencer is their tallest starter.
