The top ranked University of Florida softball team begins postseason play as it hosts an NCAA Regional. AM 850 will have live coverage of Florida's game against Georgia Tech at 5:50 today.
UCF (46-18) plays South Florida (44-18) in the opening game at 3:30 to be followed by Georgia Tech (31-29) and the Gators (62-2). Florida is the top seed for the entire NCAA Tournament.
When the Gators play Georgia Tech, they will play a team that has played very well of late. After a slow start, Tech went 21-8 over the last five weeks to gain its NCAA berth.
And the Yellow Jackets are no stranger to Gainesville; last year, Tech came to the Gainesville Regional and went 1-2, beating Texas before losing 8-0 to Florida and then losing to Texas.
Georgia Tech hits .259 as a team and is led by senior infielder Aileen Morales who hits .344 with an incredible 44 stolen bases. Junior outfielder Blair Shimandle hits .330 with 37 stolen bases. Three hitters have 10 homers or more as Brittany Barnes leads the way with 12.
In the circle, senior righthander Whitney Humphreys will be the probable starter; she is 19-15 on the year with a 1.89 earned run average.
