The NCAA has released its annual numbers in its Academic Progress Report and some big name schools were hit with information that their teams were not peforming up to academic standards set down by the NCAA.
The NCAA sets an Academic Progress Rate of 925 as its cut off point of acceptability and the University of Florida's men's basketball team for example has a score of only 919. However, the Gators overall are in good academic standing and the basketball team will not receive any penalties but has been put on notice to get better.
Tennessee had three teams cited for low academic scores in men's basketball, men's swimming and baseball.
NCAA president Myles Brand said most schools have done a good job in making academics a priority, but he does acknowledge schools that don't have a large pool of money and resources, like San Jose State, Alabama Birmingham and San Diego State, who were cited multiple times, have a harder time meeting NCAA standards.
In all, 36 teams were assessed two penalties each and if the problems persist, those schools could receive further sanctions including not being able to compete in postseason play.
