The Florida women's basketball team begins play in the WNIT tonight at home against a familiar opponent; the Gators will play Florida Gulf Coast, a team Florida beat 78-52 during the regular season.
AM 850 will have live coverage of tonight's game starting at 6:45.
This will be Florida's first game in the WNIT after receiving a first round bye; the Eagles come in after a two point home win over South Florida.
Florida Gulf Coast does not have a lot of height but does feature a team that has shooters who can hit from anywhere on the floor. 5'9" senior Delia De La Torre leads the Eagles at 14.7 points a game while 5'11" sophomore Adrianne McNally scores at 11 points a game. She led the Eagles in scoring against Florida in the regular season game with 15 points.
The Gators should have a big advantage inside but they only outrebounded the smaller Eagles by four during their first meeting. The Eagles shoot a lot of three point shots and in the first meeting, they made just 3 of 20 from beyond the arc. The big statistic in that game was the overall shooting percentage; Florida shot 68 percent in the second half to end up shooting 57 percent for the game while the Eagles shot just 33 percent for the contest.
Kentucky, South Carolina and Mississippi State are also in the WNIT; the Gamecocks and Wildcats both won their first games while the Bulldogs had a bye. Tonight, Mississippi State is at Southern Mississippi and South Carolina visits North Carolina State. Kentucky plays at home Wednesday against James Madison.
