Two University of Florida athletes, one on the men's basketball team and one on the football team, have been arrested and booked into the Alachua County Jail.
According to an arrest report obtained from the Jail, the Gainesville Police Department's Special Investigations Division conducted a reverse narcotics sting at a Gainesville residence on Monday night and there arrested 19 year old Brandon Powell, a sophomore on the Gator basketball team, and 19 year old Brandon James, a sophomore on the Gator football team.
According to an employee at the jail, both men were booked into the Alachua County Jail on Monday night and made a first appearance in court on Tuesday morning. Powell and James were both charged with purchase/possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and possession of less than 20 grams of cannibis, a misdemeanor.
According to the arrest report, GPD acted on a source tip that had the source going to an address of 1402 Northwest 39th Drive to allegedly sell the two defendants certified cannibus taken from an evidence vault at GPD. The informant allegedly sold approximately .6 grams of cannibus to the defendants in exchange for $20. The sale was recorded on video and audio. The defendants were then immediately arrested after the alleged purchase.
In a statement, Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley said he is aware of the alleged incident and as of now both players have been suspended indefinitely from their respective teams.
