Phillies Tie For NL Wild Card Lead

The Philadelphia Phillies, thought to be out of any race when they unloaded outfielder Bobby Abreu to the Yankees, now find themselves tied for the lead in the National League wild card race.

Philadelphia beat Chicago 6-2 while the suddenly hot Pirates beat Los Angeles again 6-4 as Greg Maddux saw his record fall to 13-14 on the year. San Diego keeps a half game lead over LA in the NL West but the Padres were also beaten by Arizona 8-2.

Roger Clemens won his 348th career game as Houston beat Cincinnati 7-2. The other NL winners are Atlanta, San Francisco, Florida, and Milwaukee.

In the American League, Detroit stays a half game ahead of Minnesota in the AL Central after both teams won last night; the Tigers beat the fading White Sox 6-2 while the Twins beat Boston 8-2 despite David Ortiz hitting his 50th homer for the Red Sox. Minnesota leads Chicago by five and a half games in the wild card race.

New York clinched its ninth straight AL East title after Boston lost; the Yankees lost to Toronto 3-2. Seattle, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, and Oakland are the other AL winners.
