UF Faculty Contract Agreement Heads to Mediation

Hearings have been scheduled for next month to discuss a finalized contract agreement between University of Florida faculty and UF's Board of Trustees. However, both sides are at odds when it comes to increasing faculty salaries. UF's president of the United Faculty of Florida Union John Biro says agreements have been made.
The union wants salaries to increase and disagrees President Machen's plan on spending ten million dollars to hire up to 100 new faculty. Biro says laying off existing professors and hiring new staff is not the solution to better education and considers it ineffective. But administrators disagree with the union and believe concessions are being made to satisfy faculty. University of Florida Provost Doctor Joseph Glover says that the administration offers should meet expectations of professors and staff.
Audrey June is a writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education. June says it is common for faculty unions and administrators to meet through arbitration to work out disagreements.
The American Association of Universities reports that U-F faculty salary rates have gone from the middle to the bottom ten percent in the country while administrative salaries have risen to the top ten percent. The current negotiations have reached impasse and a special magistrate will review both parties' reccommendations in December to propose a potential resolution.
