Thanksgiving Travel On the Rise

With Thanksgiving just one week away, travellers are making plans for the long holiday weekend. For some, however, this Thanksgiving may come as a much needed getaway since many had to make other arrangements last year due to high gas prices. But for some, like mother and worker Natasha Mixon, traveling is not a priority.
Mixon says taking time off to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday is not as important as working to make some extra money. But, AAA expects over 38 million Americans to travel during the long holiday weekend, up one point four percent from last year. This could mean more people coming to Gainesville. Visit Gainesville's Director of Tourist Development Roland Loog says holiday travellers should flock to Gainesville for both the holiday and rivalry football weekend.
Loog says that other attractions in the area can also provide entertainment for travelers.
With so many people hitting the roadways, AAA Spokesman Jessica Brady says no matter what your travel plans are, there are certain precautions to take to ensure safety.
Brady also says to get rest before driving for long periods of time.
But still for some, like Mixon, there will be no holiday travel this year...for her it all comes down to one thing...
AAA estimates that more people will drive to visit family and friends next week as 33 million are expected to travel by car. Only six percent of travellers are expected to fly, a decline of 62 percent in air travelers since 2000.
