Homeless Meal-Limit

The Gainesville City Commission held a meeting today to discuss raising the cap on the number of meals served at downtown's Saint Francis House homeless shelter and soup kitchen during the holidays. The current cap on meals served is 130 per day. Assistant City Manager Fred Murray has talked with the director of the shelter and says until the limit can be changed the city will offer the use of and transportation to the Martin Luther King Center as another site to serve meals on Thanksgiving.

Over ten citizens came forward at today's meeting to speak out about not just raising the meal-limit, but completely eliminating it. The City Commision took note of all of it's public speakers, and, while it can't change the limit by Christmas time, it's actively trying to address the issue.
