AGE AN ISSUE IN PRESIDENTIAL RACE?

The next presidential election is only a couple of months away. Both presidential candidates have received criticism for different reasons. Some critics have compared a young Barack Obama to and older John McCain. Some say age is big deal and many voters think age might affect a president's actions. University of Florida Assistant Professor of Political Science, Michael Heaney, says McCain's age is not a major issue. Heaney says age will not determine who voters elect to office. With the election so close, candidates start to use campaign ads against each other. Heaney doesn't believe Obama will directly target McCain's age. He says there are ways McCain is showing that age is not an issue. One well known former President, Ronald Reagan, had difficulties in his final term because of health complications but Heaney says while running for office Reagan tackled the age question. Heaney says voters have to distinguish between being older and having more wisdom. Although some critics are willing to state that age is definitely an issue in the presidential race, no one will know for sure until the election.
