Some members of the Gainesville City Commission want to educate the public about the petition that would put Gainesville's anti-discrimination ordinance back on the ballot. Gainesville City Commissioner Craig Lowe says the way in which the proposed charter ammendment is presented is leaving some residents misinformed.
The group, Citizens for Good Public Policy has been out collecting the signatures for the past few weeks. The group feels the portion of the anti-discrimination ordinance that allows men with an inner sense of being female to use a women's restroom will be used by sexual predators to attack young children. Lowe believes this is not the case, and says Gainesville residents would not discriminate based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
Lowe says there will be an active campaign to get residents to keep the city's anti-discrimination ordinance in place. The signatures on the petition must now be verified by the Alachua County Supervisor of Election's office to ensure at least a little under 56-hundred of those belong to registered voters in the city of Gainesville.
