UF Graduate Student Remains Under Police Guard at Shands

A University of Florida graduate student remains under police guard at Shands Hospital, where he is recovering from gunshot wounds. Thirty five year old, Kafi-Adu Brempong was shot by university police officers Tuesdsay night after an hour and a half long standoff at his home in Corry Village. Officers responded to a call from Adu Brempong's neighbor who said she heard screaming in the apartment. When Adu Brempong refused to answer the door, police broke in and were allegedly threatened by a pipe and knife. After trying to subdue Adu Brempong with a taser and bean bag gun, Officer Keith Smith fired a shot from his M-4 rifle. Residents that knew Adu Brempong question the need to use lethal force since he was disabled from polio and walked with a cane. University police had visited his home the day before the shooting after a professor reported him as being delusional, but he denied any help. Charges were filed against Adu Brempong, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. However, an Alachua County Judge ruled yesterday that there was no probable cause in the case. The investigation has been handed over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Two meetings were held Wednesdsay for university officials, campus police and Corry Village apartment managers to explain the events to residents.
