Support is gathering within the state of Florida to allow teachers to be paid on the basis of merit. The system would rule out tenure in favor of an annual contract renewal system. The measure is supported by Republican Senator John Thrasher of Saint augustine . President of the Alachua County Education Association, Dr. Gunner Paulson, says that the proposed, "Senate Bill Six" will diminish the power of local school boards. Public Information officer for Alachua County Schools Jackie Johnson says there are many concerns for this Bill.
Leglislators say that the Bill will reward teachers who display student improvement in the classroom. It already has the support of Senate president Jeff Atwater.
