Rural tourism is becoming more popular in the state of Florida as city dwellers choose to go from the hurried pace of the urban life to calm of nature. This idea of getting away from the city streets is common for the Midwesterners. But here in North Florida, rural tourism is just beginning. University of Florida Chair of Landscape Architecture Christina Gurucharri says this newfound rural tourism offers something for both adults and children. Although the state of Florida is well known for it's beaches, the rural tourism activities can draw more people to other activities. Gurucharri says Florida farms and horseback riding are increasing in popularity for the tourists. While more people are being lured out of the backwoods of Florida into the city, small businesses are counting on rural tourism to increase sales. Guruacharri says rural tourism also offers an economic boost to struggling communities in the area. After recieving an anonymous donation, UF's School of Natural Resources and Enviornment surveyed Hamilton County residents and businessess. Students and facilty made several suggestions on how to help the area expand their opportunities for rural tourism. Suggestions were also made to build a bike rental shop along with a restaurant with Southern home cooking in Jasper.
