New Law Passed Against Underage Drinking

A new Florida law will provide harsher punishment for adults who provide alcohol to minors. The law was passed unanimously on Wednesday by the Senate's Regulated Industries Commitee. In the past those caught providing alcohol to under-age drinkers were charged with a second-degree misdemeanor.

Under the new legislation those adults will be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor. Prevention Service Coordinator for CDS Family and Behaivoral services Gwen Love says the law will help ease the party mentality of college students in Gainesville. She also says under-age drinkers usually get their alcohol from an adult they are close to. Love is hopeful the new law will have a positive affect on the state of Florida.
