With the earthquake that hit Haiti this past month, many different organizations are coming together to try to bring aid to the country. However those who are trying to have a more hands-on approach have found themselves in a unique situation as funding from the University of Florida has been put to an untimely halt. UF Haiti Relief Coordinator, Lynn Frazier, says that while this can be see as a barrier, students can still do work, however it will not be funded by the school.
One of the students effected was Jon Bougher who was in the country working on a documentary for his thesis project on two activists in Haiti. While the current state of affairs is dismal, Jon has hopes for his plans of future travel.
The memo which was sent out on Friday has stopped UF-sanctioned, -sponsored, or -approved trips for students to Haiti. If the executive order Governor Crist placed in January expires on the 12th of Feb, things may change in terms of how faculty can travel to Hait.
