Each year during the Holiday season, the St. Francis House in Gainesville feeds anywhere from three-hundred to five-hundred people their Thanksgiving or Christmas meal. But this year, it's going to require a little extra planning because the city is strictly enforcing an ordinance requiring the St. Francis House to put a one hundred and thirty person limit on how many people they can feed.
Executive Director at the St. Francis House, Kent Vann, says the city has extended an offer to use the Martin Luther King Multi Purpose Center as an overflow for folks in need. While Vann is hoping this will be the only holiday they'll have to use an overflow center, he's confident this is a positive solution for the time being.
Vann says it may be possible for the St. Francis House location to feed more than one-hundred and thirty people this Christmas. He says he'll continue to work out the logistics with the city. Vann says the city is letting them use the Martin Luther King Center for free on Thanksgiving Day, so with minimal additional costs, it will simply take the help of volunteers.
If you're interested in contributing in any way, Vann says there's plenty of ways to pitch in, whether it's volunteering Thanksgiving Day or donating food, like turkeys and vegetables. The City Commission will meet on Thursday to finalize this year's Thanksgiving plans for feeding the homeless and those in need.
